A lonely old Inuit woman finds an orphaned polar bear cub and raises him as her own son. Once the bear is grown, the envy and fear of the other villagers force the bear to leave the village forever. Whenever the woman gets too lonely, she travels far out onto the ice and calls, "'Kunikdjuaq! Kunikdjuaq, my son!'" and the bear, "big and strong and sleek and glossy" comes running to meet her for a hug.
