It is 18th-century Japan, and a valuable ruby intended as a gift for the shogun has been stolen. Fourteen year-old Seikei may have seen the thief, and Judge Ooka (a real historical figure known as the Japanese Sherlock Holmes) enlists his help in solving the crime. Before he knows it, Seikei finds himself part of a traveling kabuki troupe in his exciting quest to unravel the mystery. Historical and cultural detail is skillfully woven into the suspenseful plot.
