Eight-year-old Connie is too young to participate in the sit-ins at Woolworth's lunch counter, but she does go to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speak, help her brother and sister (members of the NAACP) make signs for a big march, and tag along as they go door to door registering voters. The story of the Greensboro sit-ins is effectively told through a child's point of view and serves as an excellent introduction to the Civil Rights Movement for younger children. Beautiful, dark-hued paintings complement the text.
